NZGDA Publishes Open Letter on Vocational Education and Training Reforms
10 June 2025
Today, the New Zealand Game Developers Association has released an open letter outlining serious concerns with the proposed vocational education and training reforms.
The open letter has been signed by studios, educators, and industry leaders across the game development and wider creative technology sectors. It highlights the risk that the reforms will exclude digital technologies from meaningful participation in the new Industry Skills Board structure.
Our letter calls on Government to:
-
Explicitly include Digital Technologies in the scope of the Industry Skills Boards
-
Recognise game development and interactive media as core to New Zealand’s creative and economic future
-
Align education policy with the Government’s investments in the sector, including the Game Development Sector Rebate and CODE
-
Ensure industry-led, future-focused skills development is embedded in the system
Game development is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing creative industries. To remain globally competitive, we must ensure our education system reflects the needs of the digital economy.
