Mini Motorways celebrates nine million players as Dinosaur Polo Club launches new Creative Mode
27 August 2025

Wellington-based game studio Dinosaur Polo Club celebrates award-winning Mini Motorways hitting over nine million players and aims to redefine the strategy behind their simulation game with the launch of a massive free update called Creative Mode. The team view this update as something that was created as a love letter to fans.

Mini Motorways is the sophomore game from a little game studio in Wellington that comes from humble beginnings, starting as a team of three. Founded in 2013 by brothers Peter and Robert Curry, the studio first made waves with their award-winning and BAFTA-nominated debut Mini Metro. Created in collaboration with composer Disasterpeace and local artist Jamie Churchman, Mini Metro explores relaxed and minimalist subway design. Its success funded the development of a second title, allowing the studio to focus on careful, sustainable growth that has allowed them to remain a steady pillar of Wellington’s game development industry. With an inclusive and supportive culture that believes in giving back to its creative community, the studio has grown and is now home to over 30 dinos.

Mini Motorways, launched in 2019, tasks players with drawing the roads to serve a growing city, balancing the demands of its population with the constraints of the land’s geography. Creative Mode marks a departure from the standard gameplay of Mini Motorways, inviting players to become asphalt artists and redesign the layouts of all 23 of the game’s maps, which feature real-world geography from cities like New York and Mumbai all the way to Wellington.

This exciting new game mode draws inspiration from its predecessor, Mini Metro, and has been highly requested since Mini Motorways launched. Offering a whole new definition of ‘zen’ loved by Mini enthusiasts, Creative Mode gives players a brand new identity to inspire future generations of city planners; create your perfectly organised city or let loose and design an absolute monstrosity — the choice is yours!

“We know our players are stoked for this one,” said Casey Lucas-Quaid, Dinosaur Polo Club’s Community Manager. “As Mini Motorways grows and matures, we’re happy to be able to give players a much-requested creative gameplay experience. Our community helped get us to where we are now, and we can’t wait to see what they whip up with these new tools.”

Creative Mode launches today as a free update for Mini Motorways on Apple Arcade, Nintendo Switch, and PC and Mac via Steam.
